GI pipe is "galvanized iron" pipe. The material MS is low carbon steel and GI is hot dip galvanized steel. Pipelines are probably made of steel rather than iron these days.

Low temperature steel is untreated, usually hot or cold rolled, or extruded during melting. In wet weather, carbon content is low and rusty, which makes it easier to bend than other steels. It's not a black pipe for gas, it's not hardened with cyanide, it's not galvanized, it's not blue for guns, it's not cast like cast iron furniture. It is the most affordable steel.
Low carbon steel pipe refers to carbon steel content less than 0.25%, because it has low strength, low hardness and soft. It includes most of ordinary carbon steel and high quality carbon structural steel, most of which are not used for heat treatment of Engineering structures, some carburizing heat treatment and other mechanical components required for wear and tear.
